Self-efficacy is a person’s belief in their capacity to execute specific plans of action in prospective situations (Lopez-Garrido, 2020). Generally, it is an individual’s belief in their ability to succeed in a particular case. The self-efficacy theory was developed in 1977 by a psychologist known as Bandura. It postulates that an individual’s self-efficacy can influence motivation, achievement, and self-regulation.
The internal and external criticism evaluation process involves the accuracy and originality of information (Vitolla, Raimo, & Rubino, 2019). Internal criticism is trying to establish an author’s meaning and making a judgment as to the intention and prejudices of the writer. External criticism determines the validity by verifying the authenticity of a source. This paper presents a comprehensive critique of self-efficacy theory, using the internal and external evaluation process.
Bandura’s self-efficacy theory is a social-cognitive theory that suggests that self-efficacy plays an integral role in influencing the achievement outcomes through its dynamic interplay of behavioral determinants and the environment. According to Klassen and Klassen (2018), the theorist believes that whereas self-efficacy affects an individual’s well-being, motivation, and achievements, the factors that influence behavior also influence the beliefs. People tend to be involved in things in which they are confident they can succeed as opposed to the ones they are not sure about success. The robustness of the theory provides enough evidence that the concept of behavior and environment cannot be ruled out when it comes to self-efficacy.
The theory’s constructs also maintain that four factors develop efficacy. These include performance outcomes, vicarious experiences, verbal persuasion, and physiological feedback. However, other researchers after have proposed more factors that determine and develop self-efficacy. James Maddux, for instance, a psychology researcher, proposes the fifth factor, visualization or imaginal experiences (Lopez-Garrido, 2020). He believes that someone who tries to portray their goals as achievable is more likely to achieve the goals, which contributes to a higher self-efficacy.
The first step in establishing the originality of a theory is by identifying if the theory is authentic, then the level of authenticity. In their analysis, Dammann et al. (2021) note that the model of authenticity proposed by Lehman stipulates that authenticity is determined by the consistency, conformity, and connection of a piece to the body of knowledge. The theory of self-efficacy has been used constantly in research and practice in various fields. Most researchers agree with the theory, and even some apply the theory’s framework in their work. The relationship between the theory and its contribution to the body of knowledge over time clearly shows that the theory is authentic.
The self-efficacy theory has been applied in education, economics, and, more importantly, nursing. For instance, the theory has been applied in nursing to develop patient education programs for illnesses that require behavioral and self-management, such as diabetes (Jiang et al., 2019). Studies show that self-efficacy-focused programs have been considered effective in the patients. Therefore, it is worth noting that the self-efficacy theory is reliable and valid for application in research and practice that involves cognitive behavior.
As seen in the critique above, the self-efficacy theory is valid and reliable for application in research and practice. The use of external and internal evaluation of the theory has depicted its accuracy and originality. The theory’s constructs have influenced the understanding of human behavior in different experiences.

Self-efficacy theory explains that the strength and level of self-efficacy are altered by psychological procedures. Self-efficacy, in its explanation, refers to the capacity and belief to show behaviors that lead to attainments through specific performances. It is a matter of believing in oneself using parts of self like abilities, attitude, and cognitive skills. Self-efficacy theory acknowledges the different forms of human abilities and how their beliefs, thoughts, and emotions impact their behavior (Ebrahimi Belil et al., 2018).
People have a great influence on how they feel, do, and think, which is a key role as the theory emphasizes. Notably, the theory’s initial development undertook psychological procedures to determine the expectations of self-efficacy in a person and the ultimate leaf to behavior change. Moreover, self-efficacy has various expectations, from the person’s ability to execute many tasks. The beliefs lead to developing critical human competence. Being competent depends highly on one’s feelings, actions, thoughts, and source of motivation. The efficacy is thus a predictor of certain or continued behavior in contentious times.
The theory of self-efficacy postulates that an individual’s self-efficacy can be developed. Self-efficacy means the confidence a person has in their belief that they can achieve, thus influencing their performance (Marsh et al., 2019). Self-efficacy is developed through personal success, observation, comparison of performance when given similar tasks, encouragement of others, and emotional states that enhance accomplishments. Self-efficacy determines how a person handles difficult tasks, how they persevere, and whether they will achieve the desired outcomes.
The theory emphasizes that psychological processes determine an individual’s level of self-efficacy. The way individuals process information determines how they judge their capabilities (Laurencelle and Scanlan, 2018). Self-efficacy is altered by the perception of an individual’s responses to a certain situation. However, an individual’s belief in the implications of certain psychological responses alters self-efficacy. For instance, fear before entering an interview may lead to a person believing that they cannot make it, thus decreasing self-efficacy. Another person may interpret it as a challenge to face the panel and believe they can make it, increasing self-efficacy.
Self-efficacy not only determines behavior and human competence but also influences an individual’s quality of life. According to Banik et al. (2018), self-efficacy form modifiable personal characteristics that determine how they respond to illness management, rehabilitation participation, and health outcomes related to the quality of life. Liu et al. (2018) also argue that self-efficacy contributes to the quality of life through the emotions a person has when faced with a difficult situation. Improved self-efficacy can help curb negative emotions by minimizing anxiety and depression, thus improving the quality of life, especially for patients. Therefore, high self-efficacy levels could contribute to a good quality of life and vice versa.

The idea of one’s own capacity for self-sufficiency may be traced back to the Social Learning Theory, which places a strong focus on the theories of learning through observing of others. According to Bandura’s definition, Self-efficacy may be described as the conviction in one’s ability to shape and carry out the procedures of action necessary to generate specific accomplishments (Eller et al., 2018).
To put it another way, self-efficacy may be defined as an individual’s perception of the degree to which they influence their capacity to carry out desired behaviors and achieve desired outcomes (Eller et al., 2018). A person’s unique belief system is what makes up their self-efficacy and determines how well they can carry out a strategy when faced with new challenges.
Also, self-efficacy may be defined as an individual’s confidence in their capacity to achieve their goals in a given circumstance. Although Bandura is credited with popularizing the term ”self-efficacy,” psychologists have long been researching the topic from a range of viewpoints.

Team nursing as a health care delivery model has been widely adopted by several healthcare facilities. In this model, patient care is distributed amongst a group of workers led by a team leader who works together for quality patient care. Kwiatkowski (2019) defines a team leader as an individual who provides guidance, direction, instruction, and leadership to a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. It is crystal clear that a good team leader is a prerequisite for effective teamwork in team nursing. In this particular speech, I will inform my audience who are nurses preparing to take up future leadership roles on some of the most important qualities of a team leader such as effective communication, emotional intelligence, and integrity.
Effective interpersonal communication is a priority when it steps down to the building and functioning of a team. Influential leaders can communicate a vision to the staff and drive the staff towards the achievement of the target. As future nurse leaders, effective communication forms the foundation of the success of any team. The current multidisciplinary treatment environment requires that team leaders spell out directions and make the right decisions. A team leader can acquire these communication skills by listening effectively, communicating messages clearly, and by providing feedback in a supportive manner (Kwiatkowski, 2019). Team leaders go beyond listening to really hear their staff. Good team leaders furthermore seek and listen to the feedback provided by their team to cultivate their self-esteem as well as that of the team. Effective communication is an ability that few are born with but many can learn and therefore in preparation for future leadership roles, nurses should learn this particular quality using all available means even if it means through training.
The emotional quotient is the ability of a team leader to read and comprehend the social context of others, to detect nuances in emotional reactions, and to utilize that knowledge to support others through emotional regulation and control (Edelman & van Knippenberg, 2018), is a critical quality of an effective nurse team leader. A good nurse team leader should understand the challenging environment in which nurses work and train them to manage work-related stress. Edelman and van Knippenberg (2018) for instance, discovered that appropriate response to subordinate’s emotions was associated with effective leadership. Nurses preparing to take up future leadership roles should thus assist their colleagues in handling issues and other counterproductive influences that cause emotional exhaustion and poor collaboration.
Integrity and honesty are central qualities of a good team leader. The perceived integrity of leaders affects the attitudes of their staff which in turn has an impact on the overall efficiency and productivity. Integrity is utilized by leaders to make the right choices during dilemmas in patients’ treatment plans. According to Engelbrecht et al. (2017), reliable team leaders increase the satisfaction of their staff consequently leading to quality care. The link between integrity and trust cannot be overemphasized in the leader-employee relationships. Similarly, leaders with this quality have good intentions, unlike self-motives. Nurses preparing to take up leadership roles should act per their words and own up to their mistakes instead of blaming others.
In conclusion, the nursing practice provides a lot of leadership opportunities as far as team nursing is concerned. Despite all these opportunities, nurses should train to be leaders. This training involves acquiring the necessary qualities of an effective nurse team leader such as effective communication, emotional intelligence, and integrity as well as other vital qualities which were beyond the scope of this speech.
When was the last time you read Meditation XVII of John Donne’s Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions?
Unless you are a student of seventeenth-century poetry, you may not be all that familiar with this piece. However, you may be much more familiar with one of its well-known phrases: “No man is an island…”.
As you begin your journey toward achieving your academic and professional goals, you have a great opportunity to network with academics and professionals who can help ensure you do not travel alone. This network can help to clarify your own vision for success and can help guide you now and in the future. To paraphrase Donne, no one is an island.
Begin creating an academic and professional network by identifying which academic and professional connections and resources with which you need to collaborate to succeed in your MSN program and as a practicing nurse.

As a nurse embarking on an advanced degree, you are developing the characteristics of a scholar-practitioner, which include strong communication skills. Writing in a scholarly manner involves supporting your thoughts with evidence from the literature and appropriately using APA formatting.
One of the challenges of scholarly writing is paraphrasing the thoughts of others in your work. Paraphrasing, and correctly citing the original author for his or her ideas, allows you to take the ideas of others, summarize them, and incorporate them into your own writing. When summarizing the ideas of others, it is important to avoid plagiarizing (i.e., copying the words and ideas of others as though they were your own). In addition to expanding your knowledge of APA Style, this modules’ Learning Resources help you distinguish between paraphrasing and plagiarizing.
This Quiz will help you determine how your understanding of these concepts and preparedness to reflect them in your work. The questions presented on the Quiz are derived from the Resources related to APA writing standards, plagiarism, and academic integrity.

During your program, you will be required to submit your practicum application. You are responsible for applying on time and for the information that is outlined in the practicum manual. Applications are due the first day of the term before you intend to start practicum. For exact dates and for an overview of the requirements, please review our website.
It is important that you find a suitable preceptor. There is information in the Practicum manual and on our website about the requirements for preceptors. Each course has specific requirements and you are responsible for ensuring your preceptor meet the requirements. If you have questions about preceptor requirements, you may schedule a phone appointment by contacting Field Experience.
Where can you find evidence to inform your thoughts and scholarly writing? Throughout your degree program, you will use research literature to explore ideas, guide your thinking, and gain new insights. As you search the research literature, it is important to use resources that are peer-reviewed and from scholarly journals. You may already have some favorite online resources and databases that you use or have found useful in the past. For this Discussion, you explore databases available through the Walden Library.
Note: Unless otherwise noted, initial postings to Discussions are due on or before Day 3, and response postings are due on or before Day 6. You are required to participate in the Discussion on at least three different days (a different day for main post and each response). It is important to adhere to the weekly time frame to allow others ample time to respond to your posting. In addition, you are expected to respond to questions directed toward your own initial posting in a timely manner.

Using proper APA formatting, cite the peer-reviewed article you selected that pertains to your practice area and is of particular interest to you and identify the database that you used to search for the article. Explain any difficulties you experienced while searching for this article. Would this database be useful to your colleagues? Explain why or why not. Would you recommend this database? Explain why or why not.
By Day 6 of Week 4
Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ posts by offering suggestions/strategies for working with this database from your own experience, or offering ideas for using alternative resources.
The article that I chose was a review of a digital style of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in adolescents with depression. The article highlights the advantages and disadvantages of using digital CBT in adolescent therapy and its effect on depression treatment. (Ivlev et al., 2022). I chose this article because it is something that I plan on investigating closer during my studies to achieve my PMHNP.
My interest in treatment is in the adolescent age group and the effects of mental health on their life as well as treatments that benefit them. The database I used to find this article was APA PsycInfo and EBSCOhost via the Walden University library resource.
When using APA PsycInfo and EBSCOhost I did not encounter any specific difficulties during my search. I think the only difficulties others may have is the amount of information on the topics searched. For instance, while I have used these types of resources before, it can sometimes be overwhelming to research topics because there are so many options to choose from. It may be difficult to comb through the amount of information given at one time. In an article by GreenBook, the writer explains that “professionals are now often overwhelmed with organizing the vast amounts of data they get” (GreenBook, 2022).
I believe that these databases would be extremely helpful to my colleagues. I recommend the use of the databases to anyone doing or involved with scholarly research. These scholarly search engines are filled with a plethora of information pertaining to anything. It can keep scholars up to date with the latest in research.
As advanced practitioners, they can increase our knowledge of the latest treatments for patients and any developments in current treatments. By doing this, it can increase the quality of care given to the patient as well as maintain a higher level of knowledge to advance one’s practice. As a student, it is very beneficial to our success by providing quality information and credible sources (H, 2021).

Architect Daniel Libeskind is credited with saying “To provide meaningful architecture is not to parody history, but to articulate it.” The suggestion is that his work does not copy the efforts of others but relies on it.
Understanding the work of others is critically important to new work. Contributions to the nursing body of knowledge can happen when you are able to analyze and articulate the efforts of previous research. Research analysis skills are therefore critical tools for your toolbox.
In this Assignment, you will locate relevant existing research. You also will analyze this research using a tool helpful for analysis.

You have probably seen one or more of the many inspirational posters about decisions. A visual such as a forked road or a street sign is typically pictured, along with a quote designed to inspire.
Decisions are often not so easily inspired. Perhaps you discovered this when choosing a specialty within the MSN program. This decision is a critical part of your plan for success, and you no doubt want to get it right. This is yet another area where your network can help, as well as other sources of information that can help you make an informed choice.
Reflect on your decision to pursue a specialty within the MSN program, including your professional and academic goals as they relate to your program/specialization.
By Day 3 of Week 10
Post an explanation of your choice of a nursing specialty within the program. Describe any difficulties you had (or are having) in making your choice, and the factors that drove/are driving your decision. Identify at least one professional organization affiliated with your chosen specialty and provide details on becoming a member.
By Day 6 of Week 10
Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ posts by sharing your thoughts on their specialty, supporting their choice or offering suggestions if they have yet to choose.
At some point in every construction project, efforts turn from design and the focus moves to actual construction. With the vision in place and the tools secured, the blueprint can be finalized and approved. Then it is time to put on hardhats and begin work.
Throughout the course you have developed aspects of your Academic and Professional Development Plan. You have thought a great deal about your vision and goals, your academic and professional network of support, research strategies and other tools you will need, the integrity of your work, and the value of consulting the work of others. With your portfolio in place, it is now time to finalize your blueprint for success.
Much as builders remain cognizant of the building standards as they plan and begin construction, nurses must remain mindful of the formal standards of practice that govern their specialties. A good understanding of these standards can help ensure that your success plan includes any steps necessary to excel within your chosen specialty.
In this Assignment you will continue developing your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan by developing the final component–a review of your specialty standards of practice. You will also submit your final version of the document, including Parts 1–4.
Note: For students in Nursing Education, Executive Nursing, Nursing Informatics, or Public Health Nursing, this Assignment is the first Portfolio Assignment in your program. You will have one Portfolio Assignment in each of your courses. You will need to save these Assignments for inclusion in your portfolio that you will submit in your Capstone course.
Complete the following items and incorporate them into the final version of your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan.
Note: Your final version of the Academic Success and Professional Development Plan should include all components as presented the Academic Success and Professional Development Plan template.
By Day 5 of Week 11

In the modern corporate world, having advanced planning would be essential in helping an individual concentrate on planning how to be successful both academically and professionally. In the professional and academic field, success would depend significantly on the kind of network created.
The network comprises specific team members and individuals who play a role in making the academic and professional pursue success in the medical field (Siciliano et al., 2018).
Therefore, this paper describes various academic and professional connections that have played a significant role in creating my academic and professional of practicing nurse a success.
For instance, my push to become a successful nurse practitioner would depend significantly on the instructor’s and peers’ support in the academic context. As a Registered Nurse and practicing Nurse Practitioner, it would be encouraging to involve the contributions from instructors and peers that would contribute to guiding the study process.
The instructor is always in charge of any academic practice and would be willing to guide me through the research, study and course completion (Siciliano et al., 2018). The academic peers also play a significant role in making my success in a class by working on various issues that I may not understand from the instructor.
Also, in the professional context, it is necessary to have connections practically applied in contributing to the success at the place of work. Having connections and a healthy network in the medical field plays a significant role in making a successful career in the medical field.
Having a nurse mentor and a nurse practitioner mentor has also played a significant role in becoming a successful Registered Nurse.
The nurse practitioner would guide me through the practical’s and rounds I make in the facility as a new nurse practitioner in the professional field. The nurse mentor would be considerate in choosing what is best for me and how I can directly complete some professional moves.
Also, having a connection with an official nurse practitioner who is in the field creates the chances of recognition into the possibility of being considered for a Nurse Practitioner Psychiatric position in the future.
Below area a list of academic and professional networks I have chosen to help guide me through the Nurse practitioner program. Each network member plays a significant role in my successful furthering my career.

Welcome home provides me with encouragement and support to be able to succeed not only in the classroom but in real life (Jackson, 2017). They have encouraged me to pursue and continue to live out my dreams of becoming a nurse practitioner specializing in psychiatric.
NETWORK MEMBER 4
Name: National Institute of Mental Health
Title: Facility & Staff
Organization: Nation institute Of Mental Health
Academic or Professional: Academic
Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:
National Institute of Mental Health websites provides Nurse practitioners with resources needed to guide us in our careers as well as updated information in mental health.
This resource can be vital in helping me read articles based on physicians who have done real life research. The tools I learned and will learn can be applied to my success as a nurse practitioner student.
The selected professional and academic individuals are known to make a successful push to my interest in becoming a successful practicing nurse.
For instance, in the academic field, the individuals such as instructors and peers played a sensitive role in guiding me through the practices that were essentially encouraged to become one of the leading performers in the medical classes (Jackson, 2017).
In the professional contexts, the selected individuals also played a significant role in becoming a successful nurse by helping adapt to the professional practices and considering the intentions necessary in becoming a successful operator in the hospitals (Siciliano et al., 2018).
Therefore, having a strong network of professional and academic teams and individuals would be instrumental when transitioning into the nurse practitioner’s new role.
I have identified the following academic resources and/or strategies that can be applied to success in the nursing practice in general or my specialty in particular.
Directions: In the space below Identify and describe at least three academic resources or strategies that can be applied to the MSN program, and at least three professional resources that can be applied to success in the nursing practice in general or your specialty in particular.
For each, explain how you intend to use these resources, and how they might benefit you academically and professionally.
Academic Resource/Strategy 1
The approaches I will take towards my studies are primarily to evaluate my position and career goals that I need to achieve. The Walden University Writing Center will be an appropriate academic resource for use in my studies. My initiative is to achieve as much information as possible to understand diverse concepts surrounding the nursing career.
Focusing on studying the academic materials available in the writing center will be essential in building my knowledge. Further, the writing center will enhance my writing skills by helping me gain information on distinct referencing styles I should use.
As a result of relying on the university writing center, I will gain momentous understanding of a variety of topics, helping me complete my course efficiently.
Academic Resource/Strategy 2
My instructors will also be relevant resources throughout my course. Our professors have access to different academic sources and knowledge required to succeed in the nursing degree. Depending on them will be vital in enabling me to secure significant information related to being a registered nurse.
I can also rely on my instructors to advise me on the policy and support groups which will be essential in my studies.
Throughout the MSN program, I aim at building a positive rapport with the course lecturers. As a result, I will have the opportunity of gaining all the support required for my studies.
Academic Resource/Strategy 3
The other academic resources that will be efficient in my studies are my peers. Since we are in a similar course, my peers will be helpful in providing me with relevant information about various concepts. Working in groups helps expand on the knowledge that we currently have.
Thus, I shall focus on creating strong relationships with my peers. The opportunity will be necessary to interact with them and exchange ideas and concepts related to the MSN program. I believe that engaging other learners will be beneficial to my successful completion of the nursing course.
Professional Resource/Strategy 1
I have a registered nurse as my mentor in the healthcare field. Since my mentor has been practicing nursing for an extended period, he provides precise data of what I should expect. The nurse practitioner mentor is also experienced in dealing with different types of patients.
The objective of having a mentor is for him to guide me in my professional choices. He provides efficient information on the field experiences, which will be useful in improving my nursing practice.
Professional Resource/Strategy 2
The other professional resource I will incorporate in my studies is the Welcome Home facility. I will spend significant amount learning about how nurses operate in the organization. Consequently, the experiences in the institution will be useful in helping me gain knowledge and reevaluate my nursing skills.
My nursing profession will grow drastically by understanding the field expectations as a registered nurse practitioner. Thus, the Welcome Home facility will be a useful resource by providing me the opportunity to engage directly in my nursing practice.
Professional Resource/Strategy 3
My MSN program advisor will also act as a professional resource for my career achievement. My advisor has been on the job for a prolonged time. During that period, he has gained significant experience in taking care of patients. He has also attained relevant skills on how to ensure successful career growth.
My primary objective of working with my advisor will be to learn the distinct skills and gain significant knowledge on the same. My goal of being a registered psychiatric nurse will, therefore, be developed by working directly with my advisor.
Week 3 | Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics
I have analyzed the relationship between academic integrity and writing, as well as the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics.
I have also identified strategies I intend to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics of my academic work while a student of the MSN program, as well as my professional work as a nurse throughout my career. The results of these efforts are shared below.
Academic integrity involves upholding high moral conduct in all facets of higher education learning, including teaching and research. Thus, academic integrity is the core of any form of writing. Attainment of integrity requires maintenance of the virtues of honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility (Macfarlane et al., 2014).
The concept of plagiarism or intellectual theft is the chief concern that breaches academic writing integrity (Dhammi & Ul Haq, 2016). Thus, one must master how to properly paraphrase content from the scholarly work of others. Additionally, proper citation in a suitable style should be included in any writing form (Dhammi & Ul Haq, 2016).
Academic ethics and professional practices are interconnected with each other in that a person who portrays strong scholarly ethics is likely to extend the same in their professional practices.
Academic and Professional Success Plan Paper Thus, especially for the nursing profession that heavily relies on ethics to attain and maintain human health, ethics should be cultivated during school training.
Grammarly and SafeAssign, are imperative and user-friendly tools that help students improve the quality of writing and prevent direct and mosaic plagiarism.
Grammarly reduces grammatical and syntax errors, improving coherence and articulateness in the writing work, ensuring clear communication.
SafeAssign, on the other hand, detects, and prevents plagiarism in the form of an originality report. Paraphrasing allows one to use text from other authors without quoting the source directly. SafeAssign recognizes unintentional plagiarism, especially one that stems from insufficient paraphrasing.
Integrity and ethics in both academic and professional work both depend on the maintenance of particular virtues. Macfarlane et al., (2014) stipulate that honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility are the pillar of ethics in nursing as an academic and professional.
Therefore, as a student, I uphold and will continue these virtues in my academic work. As I cultivate these values, I will extend them to my professional practice.

Regardless of whether nurses are registered nurses or advanced practice registered nurses, these professionals have several important roles in evaluating healthcare policies in the United States. First, nurses participate in policy evaluation at the local level when they assume leadership positions in nursing welfare groups (Glasgow et al., 2003). Such groups profoundly affect the local and county policy-making process because they seek to address the issues nurses face in their professional practice. Consequently, nurses influence policy evaluation at the localized level by influencing improvements or redactions of laws, requirements, and policies that undermine efficiency, effectiveness, and ethical practice. Their continued contributions have enabled local jurisdictions to complement healthcare policies and empower nurses and other healthcare professionals.
The interaction of nurses at various levels of proficiency and experience with vulnerable members of the population also testifies their ability to participate in healthcare policy evaluation (Shiramizu et al., 2016). Most of the personnel involved in policy formulation, implementation, and evaluation have limited contact with minorities in the streets, veterans, ethnic minority groups, old patients, and patients in remote locations. The sentiments of such vulnerable stakeholders in the American healthcare system usually rely on their nurses, making these professionals integral in evaluating the efficacy of Federal, state, or even local healthcare policies. Therefore, nurses’ ability to interact with the American healthcare stakeholder community’s vulnerable and minority groups enables them to participate in policy evaluation through stakeholder representation (Shiramizu et al., 2016). Additionally, their input in the policy evaluation process benefits from personal, operational, and professional perspectives, which continue to demonstrate usefulness in complementing the American healthcare system’s improvement.
The first challenge both RNs and APRNs face when engaging in policy evaluation at the local and state levels is the lack of adequate facilitation. Most of the nurses who service remote areas and regions occupied by vulnerable stakeholders such as ethnic minorities and older patients lack the proper healthcare infrastructure (Milstead & Short, 2019). Unfortunately, most of America’s attention in healthcare improvement has focussed on access among patients without considering how critical healthcare personnel such as professional nurses could benefit. However, this challenge could be remedied using additional funding and training programs at both the local and state levels.
Political interference and hidden agendas among administrative personnel have often undermined the ability of nurses to participate in healthcare policy evaluation (Williams & Anderson, 2018). Many politicians use the plight of RNs, APRNs, and other challenged healthcare professionals to leverage their way into elective positions without helping these groups. However, nurses can effectively participate in local, state, and even national healthcare policy evaluation by electing nurses as their own administrative and political leaders. If local and state RN and APRN welfare groups elected members from their ranks, interference from political groups and other similar challenges might be eradicated.
Better advocacy for healthcare evaluation opportunities could occur in the United States of healthcare administration jurisdictions enabled more nursing professionals to assume offices within their ranks. Traditionally, such management and administrative positions were reserved for doctors or career managers, but giving nurses such changes will increase their policy evaluation participation (Milstead & Short, 2019). Lastly, nursing groups at the state or local levels might be informed of opportunities to participate in policy evaluation through seminars, electronic and social media, or official communication methods. Therefore, these nursing bodies understand their role in discussions revolving around America’s healthcare policies and the need to evaluate existent policies.
Policy evaluation is increasingly becoming desirable as professional nurses in the United States seek more proactive positions in the country’s healthcare system. Two possible opportunities for RNs and APRNs to participate in policy evaluation exist in state and local practices where interaction with vulnerable stakeholder groups is more pronounced. However, these opportunities expose professional nurses to two main challenges; inadequate infrastructure and political interference. Nonetheless, better advocacy among nursing communities about such policy evalution opportunites exists in the form of more leadership positions for professional nurses and increased investment in information dissemination.
I have considered various options for my nursing specialty, including a close look at my selected (Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner) specialty and second-preferred specialty. (Family Nurse Practitioner) I have also developed a justification of my selected (or preferred) specialty. Nurses must advance their knowledge and competencies to fit in the current healthcare systems because of the existing dynamics and complexities surrounding quality health care. Advancing education and practical skills allow nurses to play a significant role in transforming clinical contexts and promoting interventions to address institutional challenges (Jormfeldt et al., 2018).
For instance, one of the benefits of advancing education in nursing practices is that it enables professionals to incorporate evidence-based practices (EBPs) in solving problems and making informed decisions. As an aspiring psychiatric-mental health nurse, I know that a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is inadequate. Therefore, my BSN was only a gateway to higher education level, including Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN). As a result, I have decided to advance my career by selecting two nursing specialties of interest.
I have the determination to enroll in the Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN), where I will pursue either a master’s degree in psychiatric-mental health nursing (PMHN) or family nurse practitioner (FNP). My first choice (PMHN) entails various priority areas because it allows nurses to work with families, individuals, groups, and communities to identify issues regarding mental health. Advanced practice registered nurses in psychiatric-mental health play a significant role in providing primary care for vulnerable populations, assessing causal factors, and promoting health.
On the other hand, a master’s degree in family nursing practice (FNP) will allow me to work with families and communities while providing patient care across the lifespan, especially for the underserved population sections. Further, the FNP field will enable me to perform physical exams for patients within my specialty, develop care plans, and collaborate with other professionals in delivering primary care to the underserved population. Although the two fields are fundamental in promoting quality health care services, I prefer enrolling for an MSN in psychiatric-mental health nursing practice because its activities my strengths, knowledge, and the dream of delivering care to psychiatry patients.
The psychiatric-mental health domain is a fundamental specialty because of the issues surrounding nurses’ roles in delivering quality care for patients with mental health concerns. Lake (2017) argues that the current treatments and the dominant mental health care model do not effectively address challenges in this specialty. The reason for failing to address clinical constraints related to cognitive health is that mental illnesses account for approximately one-third of all adult disabilities (Lake, 2017). Arguably, this consideration validates the claim that mental health patients overwhelm the current global health system.
Similarly, dealing with causal factors such as depression, stress, and suicidal ideations is a daunting endeavor for nurses. Consequently, many unaddressed gaps and untapped opportunities exist in this operational area. My desire to advance knowledge in psychiatric-mental health nursing practice relies massively on the determination to help people struggling with mental concerns. Also, this field is ever-transforming, meaning I will have opportunities to develop my career and access benefits such as job promotions or increased pay.
Although psychiatric-mental health nurses require prerequisite professional and interpersonal skills, colleagues always acknowledge my ability to relate with other people, applying evidence-based practice in projects, and effective collaboration during my clinical rotations in the psychiatry department. For instance, my BSN instructor indicated that I portrayed professional attributes and personal characteristics that will allow me to excel in the psychiatry specialty.
Complements from my preceptor and peers are icing on the cake because they enhance the determination to transform the psychiatry department. Although I possess the necessary skills that will help me execute my responsibilities well, I am aware of various challenges facing psychiatric nurses. In this sense, the primary challenge when delivering care to patients with different mental health concerns is establishing meaningful relationships with them, their families, and other professionals. Also, nurses face challenges in embracing patient-centeredness principles when dealing with psychiatry patients.
One of the most prominent strategies to address these challenges is joining a reputable organization in the specialty to facilitate information sharing, consultation among nurses, and access to vital resources in the field. Therefore, I am looking forward to joining the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA). Since 1986, APNA has been in the frontline to help nursing students with various education programs and professional services to enable them excess in psychiatry departments (Delaney, Drew & Rushton, 2018). Today, the organization services nurses of different qualifications, including registered nurses (RNs), associate degree (ADN), advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), and baccalaureate (BSN).
The most profound strengths of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) are the ability to accommodate nurses from the different healthcare setting. In this sense, it is an ideal avenue where nurses, scholars, and communities can access education opportunities, scholarly resources, and other relevant information regarding the psychiatric domain. Therefore, joining APNA will advance my professional skills, enhancing knowledge, and transforming my capabilities to care for patients with different mental health concerns.

The current healthcare system is dynamic with changes aimed at improving the quality of care provided. As nurses, we play a significant role in helping revolutionize the provision of care services. Attaining my BSN was only a beginning to pave way for further advancement in my career life. Currently, I have decided to enroll in the masters of science in nursing (MSN) program at Walden University to gain the required knowledge and skills in specialized nursing practice.
My main focus out of the available specialty option is to peruse a master’s degree in gerontology or psychiatry. Gerontology focuses on providing healthcare services to the elderly patients which have gained more market in the current healthcare system, whereas an MSN- PMHNP program mainly equips nurses with adequate knowledge and skills in delivering a full spectrum of care among patients suffering from psychiatric disorders including substance abuse issues and organic brain disorders (Endsley, 2017). Out of the two, I prefer enrolling in an MSN- PMHNP program, which aligns with my strength and prior knowledge in taking care of psychiatry patients.
The current healthcare system is overwhelmed with psychiatry patients as a result of increasing mental illness cases such as depression and anxiety. As such, there is an increased demand for psychiatry healthcare specialists across all disciplines including nurses.
Consequently, nurses working in this field enjoy several benefits such as increased pay, with numerous job opportunities. Additionally, most of my colleagues have observed my good communication skills and a good relationship with my patients, which is crucial when taking care of patients with psychiatry disorders (Vargas et al., 2017). In the course of my BSN program, my preceptor, during my clinical rotation in the psychiatry department also observed my keen insight and good relationship with patients suffering from different mental disorders.
Consequently, in my report, she pointed out a good clinical outcome, among most of the patients who were under my care. As such, I find it very convenient and life-changing to focus on specializing in psychiatry, to help patients suffering from mental illness. However, it is very important to note that, the main challenge facing psychiatric nurses is forming a strong therapeutic relationship with patients suffering from mental illness together with their families.
In my professional line, I am looking forward to becoming a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA). This organization was founded in 1986 to provide leadership aimed at promoting psychiatric-mental health nurses, and improving the quality of mental health care services for patients from different cultural backgrounds, and shape the healthcare policies associated with improved mental health services (Delaney, Drew, & Rushton, 2019).
APNA membership incorporates all PMH nurses (RN), including baccalaureate (BSN), associate degree (ADN), and advanced practice (APRN). Members of this organization come from different healthcare settings such as inpatient, academic, community, and research settings, in both private and public sectors, and healthcare institutions at both federal and state levels.
APNA has made it easier for nurses to advance their education hence improving the quality of services provided to patients with mental illness, as such, becoming a member of this organization will help in advancing my career, and advance my knowledge and skills in taking care of psychiatry patients.

I have considered various options for my nursing specialty, including a close look at my selected (or currently preferred) and second-preferred specialty. I have also developed a justification for my selected (or preferred) specialty. Lastly, I have examined one professional organization related to my selected or preferred specialty and considered how I could become a member of this organization.
The results of my efforts are below.
Directions: Complete Step 1 by writing 2-3 paragraphs in the space below comparing the nursing specialty you have selected – or the one you prefer if your choice is still under consideration – to your second preference. Identify each specialty and describe the focus and the role that graduates are prepared for. Identify any other differentiators you feel are significant, especially those that helped or may help you reach a decision.
Complete Step 2 by writing a paragraph identifying and justifying your reasons for choosing your MSN specialization. Be sure to incorporate any feedback you received from colleagues in this week’s Discussion Forum.
Complete Step 3 by examining and identifying one professional organization related to your selected or preferred specialty. Explain how you can become a member of this organization.
Use the space below to write 2-3 paragraphs comparing the nursing specialty you have selected – or the one you prefer if your choice is still under consideration – to your second preference. Identify each specialty and describe the focus and the role that graduates are prepared for. Identify any other differentiators you feel are significant, especially those that helped or may help you reach a decision.
My primary area of interest within the nursing profession is Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). The chosen specialty of comparison is the family nurse practitioner (FNP). PMHNP is a subspecialty of nursing concerned with the assessment, diagnosis, and management of mental health issues in patients of all ages. PMHNPs provide holistic mental health treatment by coordinating efforts between patients, families, and other medical professionals (Delaney & Vanderhoef, 2019). Psychological and mental health illnesses, such as anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia, are just some of the many that PMHNP graduates are equipped to diagnose and treat. They could do their jobs anywhere from private practices to mental health clinics to hospitals.
Family nurse practitioners, on the other hand, treat patients of all ages and focus on disease prevention, wellness promotion, and the management of both acute and chronic conditions. FNPs have the knowledge and experience to evaluate patients, prescribe medications, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and determine treatment regimens (Owens, 2019). They also teach people how to take better care of themselves and how to prevent illness. Graduates of FNP schools are qualified to find employment in a wide range of medical facilities, including those providing primary care, outpatient care, and urgent care as well.
The emphasis/focus of each field is a key distinction between them. The main role of an FNP in care contrasts with the specialty care role of a PMHNP. PMHNPs and FNPs deal with distinctively different types of patients. FNPs treat patients of all ages who have a wide range of acute and chronic medical disorders, while PMHNPs focus primarily on those with mental health issues (Hodges et al., 2019). The context in which they do their work is also distinctive, contributing to another difference. Both PMHNPs and FNPs can practice in a variety of settings, including inpatient and outpatient care facilities. I can state that one’s personal preferences and professional aspirations should guide their decision between the two fields of study.
Use the space below to write a paragraph identifying and justifying your reasons for choosing your MSN specialization. Be sure to incorporate any feedback you received For a variety of reasons, I decided to pursue a career as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). To begin, I feel strongly that mental health deserves the same attention as physical health. By becoming a PMHNP, I will be able to deal with people of all ages and give them the full range of services they need for their mental health (Kverno & Fenton, 2021).
Secondly, I hope to have a positive impact by assisting people and families who are dealing with mental health issues because there is a rising need for mental health providers in our community. Finally, my colleagues in this week’s Discussion Forum provided insightful criticism, drawing on their experiences and perspectives as PMHNPs to offer suggestions for improvement. Their advice strengthened my resolve, and I came away from our conversation with a deeper appreciation for the work of PMHNPs and the difference they can make in patients’ lives. I am confident that focusing on PMHNP is the best route for me, and I look forward to beginning this journey to promote better mental health for all.

The American Nurses Association (ANA) has a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Professional Organization that serves as a network for PMHNPs and other mental health nurses. Registered nurses (RNs) in the United States are represented by the American Nurses Association, and the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses’ Programme is a subset of the ANA dedicated to improving the field of psychiatric-mental health nursing via practice and education. To become a member of the organization, the person needs to be a current member of the ANA to join the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses’ Programme (Foster et al., 2019).
Members of the ANA must be registered nurses who are currently licensed to practice in the United States or one of its territories. Anyone who has already joined the ANA and paid the membership cost can also join the PMHNP. The American Nurses Association offers its members the chance to stay abreast of the newest research and advancements in the field of psychiatric-mental health nursing through continuing education courses, professional networking events, and newsletters (Bradshaw et al., 2021). One of the benefits of membership is the opportunity to take part in lobbying initiatives to expand the field of psychiatric-mental health nursing and raise public awareness of mental health issues.
