Allentown stands on an extensive tract of land that was originally hunting grounds for Native Americans. A council of tribal leaders consented to vend the land to the sons of William Penn in exchange for an array of goods consisting of items such as articles of clothing, tobacco pipes and looking glasses (Haurer, 1902).
