Roles of Early Childhood Education Trainers, Teachers and Parents in Guidance and Counseling ($1)
Introduction
The role of trainers, teachers and parents in guidance and counseling is to develop in children the following qualities:
A sense of honor and self control and to boost their self esteem.
A genuine understanding of and differentiation between fact and fancy, that is, the ability to know who one is and what one wants.
Truthfulness and honesty. This means discouraging all types of cheating and lying in children.
For this reason, each of the stakeholders has to take seriously their respective roles in order to impart desirable qualities to the young children.
Role of Early Childhood Education Trainers
It is important for ECDE teachers to be well trained in guidance and counselling. The aim is to impart to the teacher trainee skills and knowledge on how to:
Care for and guide the young children in their academic work, play, interactions with other children and in other daily activities.
Counsel children with special needs as well as their parents.
Counsel children with behavioral problems.
Counsel the children in preparation for their moving from ECDE centers to primary schools.
The trainers should also train the ECDE teacher trainees on how to identify children with behavioural problems, those who are troubled and those who are troublesome.
Identifying children with behaviour problems
Children who are troubled or troublesome portray behaviours that are maladaptive (deviant) and socially unacceptable. They make life miserable for themselves and others around them. The behaviour of such children is characterized by the following:
Repeated deliberate antisocial behaviours like being aggressive, fight, kicks and hurting others. They habitually tell lies and steal.
Showing unusual behaviour of attempting to please others by giving them gifts to buy their affection or friendship.
Often crying and complaining a lot.
Putting others down by calling them names, blaming others for their own mistakes and always giving excuses for their undesirable behaviour.
Lacking decision-making ability and fears trying out new things even when help is offered.
Usually withdrawn and tends to retreat to fantasy.
Is usually afraid to ask or answer questions. Exhibiting behaviours like thumb sucking, biting of nails and bed-wetting.
It is therefore important for ECDE trainers to help the teacher trainees to be able to identify, teach and counsel such children so that these children can cope and control their frustrations.
