Inspired by Kierkegaard, Heidegger, and Sartre, this approach deals with life issues, such as freedom, death, loneliness, and purpose, to help clients become closer to themselves and more resistant and responsible.
Part 1: Five Guidelines of Existential Psychotherapy
Freedom and Responsibility
Existential therapy stresses that people are(represent) free to create their own lives and are fully responsible for their actions. This freedom, however, can be overwhelming because it means that clients are expected to make life choices based on their characteristics. Counselors assist clients in embracing this liberty by making choices that can enhance personality and autonomy.
Search for Meaning
Existential psychotherapy, an important approach in this line of thinking, is very clear that an individual must make meaning of their life (Diamond, 2021). Without this, people may lack life goals and meanings, leading to perceived ineffectiveness. Counseling deals with what matters to the client in the given context to help them find meaning and make their challenges or times of change meaningful.
Acceptance of Mortality
Accepting the possibility of death is considered to be one of the keystone points of existential therapy. Although thinking about death may cause anxiety, embracing death encourages the clients to start doing worthwhile activities and live in the present moment. Clients are helped to tackle death to achieve increased actualization.
