Surgical site infections (SSIs) are major types of Healthcare-associated infections, which are common and costly globally. Prevention and control of SSIs depend on adopting recommendations of guidelines offered by several authorities. The choosen document is The Guideline Development Group. Although each of these guidelines aims to lower the rates of SSIs, their focus and the environment in which they are implemented are quite distinct (NICE, 2019). The following three approaches and guidelines will be used for the comparison and contrast in terms of their applicability to a healthcare organization:
NICE Clinical Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Surgical Site Infection (2019)
The NICE guidelines are extensive on infection prevention and management, highlighting medical and non-medical means of isolating SSIs. In light of the present developed NICE guidelines, a clear understanding of radical surgery procedures and requirements at preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative management levels is essential, including meticulous technique of surgery, adequate use of prophylactic antibiotics, and correct wound management (NICE, 2019). Despite its focus on infection prevention, one of the main concepts of the NICE guidelines is that active infection prevention measures are a part of the broad patient care plan.
Among the implementation advised in the NICE guidelines is the proper choice of preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis. They target to reduce the time taken to administer antibiotics to not more than one hour after the incision. Fu
