Management of Emotional and Psychological Problems ($2)
Introduction
Emotions are individual's subjective feelings and moods. The term applies to both physiological and behavioral responses to specific stimulus situations. The emotional and psychological problems that are commonly experienced by many people include anxiety, stress, depression, anger and grief. These emotions can negatively affect our lives if they are not well managed.
Anxiety
Anxiety is a state of mental uneasiness or concern about some uncertain event. It usually leads to increased activation or arousal accompanied by generalized feelings of fear and apprehension. It is a signal of impeding danger and conflict. The unconscious mind is a storehouse of wishful impulses in opposition to the world of order. Anxiety disorders are psychological disorders that take several different forms but which are all related to a generalized feeling of anxiety. According to Philip Kendal! and Steven Hollon, 1989, there are three main types of anxious statements, namely those reflecting inability to cope with the challenges of the future, those reflecting self-doubt, and those suggesting confusion and worry regarding future plans. Stress is a difficulty that causes worry or emotional tension. It is our response to events that disrupt or threaten to disrupt our physical or psychological functioning. Events or situations in our environment that cause stress are called stressors. Stress has also been defined as the experience of unpleasant over- or under-stimulation that actually or potentially leads to ill health (Bond, 1086).
