Although the research does not support its use as a definitive diagnosis, many in the criminal justice system remain convinced that psychopathy and "untreatability" are interchangeable terms. This misconception has substantial consequences: The defendants who are labeled as psychopaths are often given more extended periods, less chance to be paroled, and fewer opportunities to be given a chance for rehabilitation.
